Wishing everyone a Happy Healthy 2021!
2020 unexpectedly and tragically turned out to be the Year of the Cornoavirus Pandemic
But we have been seeing people coming together as a community as we go through this crises together.
It's tough to bear the lost time with loved ones, and lost celebrations with friends and family, or worse the loss of a loved one and not being able to be with them.
Wtih the Vaccine now in 2021 we can start to heal, it will take some time but we'll get there!
Stay strong, stay well, stay safe, stay in touch!

Jamie made a more traditional family style Holiday Card again, rather than her elaborate cards that took over 6 months from concept to production as shown further below. These days she'd rather spend that time on my fine art, work, and with her amazing family, but it doesn't mean she'll ever stop using her photoshop tricks!
Jamie BenAziz-Zacharatos is also a 3rd degree blackbelt, and martial arts weapons instructor, business Administrator
GOODBYE 2020 . . .WELCOME 2021

PLANNING TO RESUME INDOOR CLASSES IN THE FALL 2021!
Our fall city karate/kickboxing/MMA classes are planned to be back INDOORS starting 9/27!
It's most likely our year round karate/Kickboxing/MMA classes will resume indoors in the fall as well! We'll let you know when we can confirm this with City approval. (it's subject to change depending on the Covid situation at the time)
*(The city facilities are a bit more strict than private facilities in an abundence of caution,
so that's why you see other gyms and martial art studios re-opening sooner.
But being located in a city facility has great benefits, we can keep our class fees lower for you, because our overhead is lower than at a private facility, we pass the savings on to you!
We are resuming our outdoor "Soccer Workshops" with the city this summer age 7-10 starting 6/22,
and in the fall for ages 5-7 starting 9/28!

GETTING BACK IN THE RING
AFTER A LONG PANDEMIC PAUSE!
Scott and Trevor finally get back to boxing basics sparring today (4/25/21) with Master Zacharatos coaching them from the side.
They had a lot of great exchanges, and was so helpful they worked on sparring drills the week before.
*(Special thanks to our longtime friend, Joey Escobar Karate, for use of his boxing ring)
Eager to get back in the ring!
Scott and Trevor (vaccinated) train "together" with Master Z (also vaccinated) for the first time in over a year due to the pandemic!
They look forward to sparring again full force, but today worked on getting back into it with drills that worked on both Offense and Defense techniques-
Jab, straight right, left hook, and
Parry, slipping, ducking
No shortcuts you have to do the work before you step back into the ring!
Outdoor private lessons at other locations for (no contact) Karate, Kickboxing, or Soccer are available now, contact us if you're interested.
We'll keep you posted when our indoor
in -person Karate Kickboxing/MMA classes can resume at our Calabasas Tennis & Swim center location
What a difference a year makes!
We look forward to seeing you back in our classes soon!
Nico gets her Covid vaccine today March 25, 2021,
Soon in April, California will open up to everyone 16 & up, it's about time!
And I never have to go on that awful "Vaccinate LA" website again!
It literally consumed me for about 2 1/2 months getting all of us appointments!
Hopefully it will get easier, and this year long nightmare will begin to come to an end, and we can hug our loved ones again too!

So Cool . . .
We are saddened by the loss of Bernie "Pops" Krasnoo
who passed away recently in early February 2021 after battling an lillness (not covid).
He was Master Zacharatos' manager when he was fighting professionally from the late 70's to early 80's.
Pictured here moments after Master Zacharatos wins the Calif kickboxing title fight by knockout, he celebrates with Pops, and Pops claiming to the press, "we want them all"!
You can see the fight on our YouTube Channel: CA State Kickboxing Title Fight 1980
Before having his own martial arts studio with his wife, Master Zacharatos was chief instructor at Sherman Oaks Karate that Pops eventually owned, and Pops was a student of Master Zacharatos.
Master Zacharatos was a member of the undefeated Sport Karate team, "Sherman Oaks Raiders" for 5 years, the dominant team of the 1980's!
You can check out their instagram for more blasts from the past with Pops and others: Sherman Oaks Raiders
One of a kind Pops touched many lives, and we're all connected by Sherman Oaks Karate!
Fortunately, Master Zacharatos and Pops had the opportunity to speak on the phone several times very recently, and reminisced
about old times. Truly a gift for them both.
You don't know it will be the last time you speak with someone until it is. Makes you think about the importance of reconnecting with old friends.
We were happy to attend and celebrate his 80th birthday a few years ago with him, his family, and many of the old Sherman Oaks Karate gang!
We will miss you old friend!

It was tough when many of our students were about to test for their next belts when the quarantine was imposed.
Not wanting to quit training during the quarantine, Lily continued training in Karate with our zoom lessons, then later transitioned to outdoor lessons when that was allowed, that's dedication!
WE VOTED! 2nd Dan Nico Zacharatos at 18, a first time voter, with her mom 3rd Dan, Jamie BenAziz-Zacharatos on 10/30/2020

And let there be Peace no matter what the outcome, no excuse for violence
We must stop this cycle of division and find a way to work together, only then can there be progress and great accomplishments!

Congrats to 2nd degree blackbelt Nico Zacharatos on her HS Graduation!
This historic class of 2020 all over the country, where all the senior events, prom and graduation, were cancelled with some alternatives.
But even out of challenging times, good things can come!
The inspiring virtual video ceremony, and
a drive through parade to pick up their diploma. Nico stood on the seat of the car with her head out the sunroof, as we all drove (slowly) in decorated cars, everyone in cap and gown, honking and cheering as we made our way to the school. It was an unexpectedly insanely fun uplifiting experience!
There were some bright moments during a darker time!
"You will be happy life said, but first I'll make you strong!"
Nico Graduated with 4.2 GPA, awards, is accomplished in music & sports, is looking forward to College as a commuications major!

Nico mostly known for her original Jazz/Blues piano and electric guitar, is on percussion (using the back of her ukulele as a drum) along with her very talented musical friends.
On freestyle vocals is rapper and actor Ozie Nzerbie (ZMNY), and Manee Monjezi's original composition on guitar and vocals.

Nico Zacharatos (2nd dan) rocked the house on Piano and Electric guitar, to which Ralph Johnson (Zacharatos Black belt and original member of Earth Wind & Fire) replied, "I found my opening act"!
A lively elegant event with friends and family, many from our "martial arts" family too, going back decades, probably the safest party too ! haha
Here's to staying young at heart at any age!
Guests age ranged from 20's -70's all brought together by shared interests of martial arts and music!
Our amazing Guests also have a habbit of not slowing down, but continuing to take on new challenges as they get older, and crushing it! What an inspiration!
Like Jamie's 99yr old dad who proudly states he walks like a 45 year old, she decided to age backwards!
Congrats to Zacharatos Blackbelt, Ralph Johnson,
a.k.a. Original member of the musical Group "Earth Wind & Fire",
on LA declaring in 2019, September 21st Earth Wind & Fire Day!
Ralph Johnson is quite an accomplished martial artist as well, he's a "Zacharatos" first degree blackbelt in "American Tang Soo Do", and a Third degree blackbelt in "Kung fu san soo""""

2nd Degree Blackbelt Nico Zacharatos, also on the Varsity Tennis Team, celebrates her winning overhead smash for the match point! Nico and her partner Tiffany won all 3 of their matches Sept. 12, 2019. Way to go!
Nico is on fire this season, you practice for years then all of a sudden overnight you get great! But you have to do the work! Always cool under pressure, must be her martial arts training too!
Here's Former longtime "Zacharatos" student, Fred Sterman, back in 1991 showing how "Zacharatos" students play basketball with his high kicks up to the basketball hoop!
Then Fast forward about 30 years, you can see he hasn't lost a step, he's still got the high kicks!
Fred trained with Master Zacharatos in kickboxing and sparring for many years until Fred moved out of our local area.
We're glad to see Fred kept up his training, and it's another example of how exercise is a major key to staying young! Keep kickin' it!

All the consistent hard work paid off!
We always tell our martial arts students, if you don't reach your goal on the first try, that's not the time to quit, it's the time to work harder!
And that's exactly what Nico did.
You can apply that philosophy to anything in your life!

He has demonstrated what it is to be a martial artist, very respectful, works hard, helps out the lower ranks, he's a great example to our students!
We're Proud to call him a Zacharatos Blackbelt! As Master Zacharatos says, now his journey has just begun!
Paula Kirchner was awarded her 3rd degree blackbelt on June 27, 2018! She started training with Master Z over 30 years ago!
She worked with weapons instructor Jamie BenAziz-Zacharatos and learned two new weapons, the bow staff and nunchucks, and continued with Escrimas that she learned for her 2nd degree.
She worked with Master Zacharatos and learned more kickboxing and boxing techniques, and more amazing blackbelt katas, as well as some tricky basics going backward and forward.
This was quite a commitment for this working mother of two, if you want something go after it, and don't let anything stop you!
She brought along her husband and a friend to take a ton of photos and videos of her test, and
Jamie wore her WonderWoman ring for good luck, not that Paula needed luck with all her hard work! (yes, Jamie the sci fi fan has a WonderWoman ring) For more about Paula, visit our "About Us" page

2017 ZACHARATOS NEWSLETTER
SPORTS PLAYS A POSITIVE ROLE IN YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
Research shows that in addition to improved physical health, sports plays a primarily positive role in youth development,
including improved academic achievement, higher self-esteem, fewer behavioral problems, and better interaction
between social and psychological factors.
The many facets of playing sports, the discipline of training, learning teamwork, following the leadership of coaches,
and even learning to lose, provide lifelong coping skills. Especially in this new age of youths spending so much more time
playing with electronic games and cell phones, getting involved in sports can be overlooked.
Teaching sports for over 20 years, we at Zacharatos Karate Kickboxing/MMA & Soccer, have seen how the benefits
of sports have positively impacted the lives of our students, beyond just learning the skills of a specific sport.
CONCUSSIONS IN YOUTH SPORTS
As a pro MMA referee & judge with the California State Athletic Commission, Coach Zacharatos was required to take an
online course at Heads Up for youth sports to learn about concussions. We found the information informative and
thought we’d pass it on to you, especially if your child is involved in any sports and gets a blow to the head.
Studies estimate that nearly 50% of high school football players suffered concussions, 35% suffered at least two. But the
developing adolescent brain needs time to recover.
In the last 15 years, the children who suffered severe life-altering or fatal
injuries, in almost every instance, the youth attempted to hide the symptoms of the concussion to keep playing.
But this tragic outcome can easily be avoided by having some helpful information on the subject.
Every brain injury is different and some symptoms appear right away, but others may not show up for days or weeks after,
so it’s hard to recognize or admit the child is having problems. Yet, one more hit to the head with an existing concussion is
very dangerous. If a coach tells you to “walk it off” or a child insists they’re fine after a blow to the head, even if it’s difficult,
stand up to them, pull your child out of the game and go to the doctor. It’s better to be safe than sorry considering what’s at stake.
Some symptoms to look for are: *One pupil larger than the other, *Drowsiness or inability to wake up, *Headache that gets
worse or won’t go away, *Slurred speech, weakness, numbness, or decreased coordination, *Repeated vomiting or nausea,
convulsions or seizures. Rest is key to help the brain heal, and return slowly to both mental and physical activities, in order to make a full recovery.

ATHLETIC CODE OF ETHICS FOR YOUTH SPORTS
I was filling out the Athletic packet for our daughter Nico who is on the Calabasas high school tennis team, and was pleased to see some of the same
training philosophies that we’ve taught in our studio regarding sports. We call it rules and regulations, they called it the Athletic Code of Ethics.
Master Zacharatos always tells our students when competing in martial arts or any sport, you have to be a good winner and loser, don’t make excuses
if you don’t do well, give your opponent credit. I liked how the code of ethics stated a similar sentiment, “Win with character and lose with dignity”
Watching Wimbledon tennis this summer, it has been a great example to see how gracious the winners and losers speeches are after the finals. Professional
sports should set a positive example for our youth. Some other highlights in the code of ethics that mirror what we teach in martial arts are, to show respect
for your teammates as well as your opponents, officials and coaches, and to exhibit fair play, sportsmanship, and proper conduct on and off the field.
I thought it was important that they also had a parent code in the Athletic Code of Ethics.
When we have karate or soccer tournaments, we always tell our students that win or lose, the most important thing is that you participated, tried your best, and
had fun, you didn’t just sit on the sidelines, you were part of it.
The parent code also echoed that when they said to make sure your child knows that win or lose you appreciate their efforts and are not disappointed in them if
they lose. (we’ve seen a few over the top parents at competitions over the years that would benefit from the code of ethics). Another good point
they make is to be honest about your child’s athletic capability, competitive attitude, sportsmanship, and actual skill level. Something we assess when we get a
new student. We know skill levels and potential will vary, but we always tell our students, you don’t have to be the best, but we expect you to always try your best,
and whatever level you’re starting at, you’ll improve with practice. The code also stated how important it is not to compare your child with other teammates,
especially in front of them, and to not discuss your child with the coach on a game day, set up another time to talk.
We always teach our students that advancement in your sport is earned by hard work, once in a while we see parents try to negotiate a short cut
way around that, or parents tell us some soccer coaches favor certain kids rather than give everyone a fair chance, which takes away from
the kids that earned their spot on the team. Rewards in sports should be earned and based on merit alone, the same as a grade on a math test for example.
A parent recently told me a story about her son's unfortunate experience with sports at a private high school. His passion has always been basketball, and he’s played for years, and she’d love to go watch him play. But it got so bad at the school, where kids were even repeating a year of school so they’d be older and bigger for the advantage, that he felt he had no choice but to quit. What should have been a great high school experience in sports for him is now gone.
If only those parents and coaches would actually put kids first, so all kids would have the chance to have a positive experience being on a sports team, based on fairness and merit, and not on finding ways to cheat the system. Luckly that’s not every students experience, and there are great coaches and parents as well. Our daughter has been having a great experience on the tennis team that has enriched her high school experience, by being part of a team, making new friends, training hard and setting goals. But hopefully if enough people speak out about it when negative things do happen, changes can be made.
When parents, coaches, and students can all on the same page about having a code of honor and respect in sports, being involved in sports can be one
of the most rewarding, enriching, positive, social skill and confidence building experience, with life time benefits for your child.
ADDITIONAL BENEFITS OF SPORTS: Research finds that in addition to improved physical health, sport plays a primarily positive role in youth development, including improved academic achievement, higher self-esteem, and fewer behavioral problems. The many facets of playing sports; the discipline of training, learning teamwork, following the leadership of coaches, as well as learning to lose, all provide lifelong skills for athletes.
To Master Zacharatos:
"Thank you for always pushing me to become better, I learned so much from you and the experience working with you. Martial Arts is a huge part of who I am today, and you started that journey.
Thank you for all that you have done for me!"
To Master Zacharatos:
"My son was attacked at school yesterday. He was pushed to the wall by some angry kid. His parents apologized to me, but I am truly BLESSED that he was able to defend himself. He used your techniques and the kid ran away."

Master Z started training him when Jeremy was just 8 years old!
(He's known him for 36 yrs!)
Jeremy went on to be a great martial artist, the head designer of "Call of Duty" Video game, but more than that, Jeremy is an amazing human being and great friend!
(For more on Jeremy Scroll down below in "blasts from the past!")

NICO MAKES THE CALABASAS HIGH SCHOOL TENNIS TEAM! Congratulations to our daughter, and 2nd degree blackbelt, Nico Zacharatos, who made the High School Tennis Team August 2016!
The years of hard work paid off! She's worked with a coach since she was 5 years old, but in the last few years, really started getting serious about it, training more often, participating in the high school summer tennis camp, continuting to work with her coach, and playing with us (a.k.a. mom and dad) and her teammates.
Congrats to all her friends who also made the team!
Nico worked so hard, practicing in the hot summer weather, but how great it is to work so hard, and then acheive your goal! We're so proud!
UPDATE, in 2017 was on the team for second year, with a record of 11 wins and one loss with her partner Tiffany!
Thanks to all the Fire Fighters who worked so hard and bravelyto save all our homes here in the Calabasas fire that started June 4th, 2016. True Heros!
Congratulations to our daughter and Zacharatos 2nd Degree Blackbelt,
Nico Zacharatos, Graduating A C Stelle Middle School with Honors! on June 8th 2016
We're so proud!
She'll be trying out for the tennis team in High School!
One of our long time Students Pieter, had to move away due to his Dad's work.
He was a pleasure to have in class, and a terrific martial artist, with a great attitude, and always did his best in class.
On his last class on June 30, 2016, we took a few photos.
We hope one day his family can move back or visit, in the mean time, we'll keep in touch like we do with all our students!
His family has lived in England, Canada, Cincinnati, Calabasas, and now San Francisco!
We wish him and his family all the best on their new adventure!
We'll miss you Pieter!
Pictured below Master Z and Jamie with Green Belt Pieter, and students Green Belts Adi & Nan, and Red Belt Ewan
Congratulations to Zacharatos 3rd Degree Blackbelt, Dean Mattes,
who graduated Calabasas High School June 9th 2016!
Way to go Dean! We're proud of you!
Like Giancarlo before him, Dean will also be leaving us for now as our assistant, as he goes off to college and has a full time job!
He'll stop by when he can just like Giancarlo, we'll miss him!
We always lose our Karate assistants when they graduate high school! Hopefully another one of our advanced students will step in for Dean, just as Dean stepped in for Giancarlo.
Time again to pass the torch!
But fortunately for us, our former assistants continue to stay in touch with us over the years!(and he lives just down the street from us!)
Rumor has it, that high schooler and Red Belt Ewan,
may be our next assistant, stay tuned!
MASTER Z WAS A JUDGE AT THE PRO-MMA WOMEN'S INVICTA FC 15, January 16, 2016
HERE'S SOME HIGHLIGHTS WRITTEN ABOUT ONE OF THE 5 MATCHES HE JUDGED!
Stepping in on short notice, Colleen “The Thoroughbred” Schneider (10-6-0) picked up one of the biggest victories of her career in her bantamweight contender’s bout against Hawaii’s Raquel “Lionheart” Pa’aluhi (5-5-0). All three rounds of the fight were competitive ones, but Schneider’s superior striking ultimately outweighed Pa’aluhi’s grappling and takedowns on two of the three judges’ scorecards.
Pa’aluhi slammed Schneider to the mat and took her back on the way up in round one, but Schneider countered with punches and elbows in close that opened a cut above Pa’aluhi’s left eye. Pa’aluhi caught a kick from Schneider and jumped on her back, but she was unable to secure a rear-naked choke before the bell. In the second stanza, Pa’aluhi scored another takedown and she kept Schneider pinned against the fence throughout the round. Schneider eventually broke free and she landed lead right hooks to Pa’aluhi’s badly swollen eye.
With the fight seemingly up for grabs, Pa’aluhi was aggressive early in round three and she scored a takedown after eating a hard left hand from Schneider. The fight returned to the feet and Schneider connected with a right hook before Pa’aluhi took her back. She took Schneider down momentarily, but Schneider scrambled up and landed some nice flurries. A bloodied Pa’aluhi returned fire with knees and leg kicks, and the fight ended with an exchange of punches.
Judge Chris Crail scored the close fight 29-28 for Pa’aluhi, but he was overruled by judges Mike Bell and Gerassimos Zacharatos, who both had it 29-28 for Schneider. With the Split Decision victory, Schneider extended her current winning streak to four. She may move on to challenge for the Invicta FC bantamweight title, though it must be noted that Schneider failed to make weight for tonight’s fight.

In late December 2015, we had the pleasure of meeting undefeated UFC champ and WWE pro-Wrestler, Daniel Puder, who has a non profit organization and works with troubled teens and anti-bullying. What a great way to make a difference!
We've seen just in our karate studio in the past 20 plus years, how sports, specifically martial arts and soccer, has changed the lives of many youths by having positive consistent role models, and working together to achieve goals.
His organization also has school programs, including a Pre-College Platform, recognized by College applications, to set you apart from other applicants.
His program and partnerships helps you with Extra Curricular activities, community activites, volunteer work, influential letters of recommedations, special awards, all ways that make you stand out and succeed in the competitive application process.
Like a letter from the President's Council on Fitness for example!
We've always wondered why Schools don't teach Martial arts or Self-Defense.
We've received requests to teach private lessons in women's self defense, many times for young women before they go off to college.
if you'd like to see it in your school, let them know.
If your school is in our district or nearby Calabasas, let them know you'd like Zacharatos to teach Martial Arts and Self-Defense at your school!
If you're interested in learning, join our karate or kickboxing/classes which are great for self defense.
Or if you would just like to take a few lessons specifically in Self-Defense techniques to learn fighting off an attacker, and common sense tips to avoid an attack, set up some private lessons with Master Zacharatos, or private group lessons to share with a friends

MASTER Z WITH CAROL "MOTHERGOOSE" 1997
It is with Great Sadness we found out that on May 4th, 2015, our dear friend and former kickboxing student, Carol B. a.k.a. "Mothergoose" passed away of Cancer.
She was one of a kind, with a young spirit.
Master Z nicknamed her mothergoose because she had a huge variety of animals, including a full grown goose in her back yard at her home!
Then years ago she gave up her beloved home/farm in Northridge, and she moved to Oregon to be
near her grandchildren.
We kept in touch over the years.
In her 60's and 70's she trained in karate and went to red belt, and would send us photos from Oregon as she advanced in belts. She also loved to paint (and sent us photos of her art), she did Yoga, taught Pilates, loved to travel to exotic places like Nepal, she had such a zest for life.
She never forgot our daughter's birthday and would always send Nico a birthday card with a $20 bill each year, for 13 years!
When she told us she had cancer about a year ago, she always stayed strong, never complained, and said, it's OK I'll be OK.
She will be greatly missed!
We'll never forget our Mothergoose!
You can see in this photo, she's
putting bunny ear fingers behind Master Z's head! That was so her!
Our own 2nd Degree Blackbelt and daughter, Nico Zacharatos surfing on her 13th birthday in March!
Congratulations to all our students who participated in our Karate Tournament on March 16, 2015!
We had so many exciting matches, from our yellow and orange belts who also included take downs and flying superman punches, to our green and blue belts with spinning back kicks and demonstrating more advanced techniques, then to the grand finale match of Mr. Dean (3rd Dan) and Connor who had two take downs and had the crowd and participants gasping and cheering!
There was great sportsmanship and control throughout the tournament with students supporting each other as they competed!
The matches were refereed by Master Zacharatos 7th Dan, and Mrs Zacharatos (Jamie) 3rd Dan.
Photos and Videos were taken by our own Nico Zacharatos 2nd Dan.
Thanks to the families of our participants for being our time keepers and score keepers!
With Great Sadness, we found out that Master Z's good friend and longtime private student, attorney Steve K., passed away January 7, 2015 of Cancer. Steve-O as Master Z called him, was still training with him when Steve was in his 70's.
They would often talk after a workout, and became great friends over the years.
He was diagnosed with cancer about a year prior to his passing.
He will be greatly missed.
NEW in 2014 and 2015
Check out our new big soccer goals for more advanced students! Now used for Coach Z's private soccer workshop on Sundays, see Soccer page for more info
Congratulations to Mr. Dean Mattes,
who was awarded his 3rd degree blackbelt on October 29, 2014!
Pictured here with Master Z and Jamie
We're so proud to have him assist us in our classes, he started with us when he was very young, and has really matured as an instructor and martial artist.
Congratulations to our newest group of Junior blackbelts, Mr. Diego, Ms Else, Mr. Benjamin, Mr. Stan, Mr Rens, who tested on June 21, 2014
Since they all testsed together, I
call them the Blackbelt 5 ! (you know, like Ocean's 11!)
They're the class of 2014 (along with Patricia and Anirv who tested in April, see below)
They had such a great test, I loved the support they gave each other during the test.
When breaking boards, they'd all "high five" each other and cheer each other on!
It's becoming a tradition to have a little class party after they were presented with their blackbelts in class the day after they tested.
We hope they will continue to train with us, it's always a pleasure to watch our students grow up during their many years at Zacharatos Karate!
We're so proud of you!
Congratulations to our newest Junior Blackbelts, Prathyusha (a.k.a. Patricia) and her brother Anirv, who tested on April 12, 2014.
It was also their last day in the U.S. After their going away party on April 16th when they were presented with their new blackbelts and uniforms, they left the very next day for India. They said their move may not be permanent, and they may move back to Calabasas, either way, they'll still come back for a visit.
They started training with us in 2009! It was a pleasure to have them in class, Congratulations!
Jan 20th 2014
Mr. Giancarlo came to workout Monday at our kickboxing class, since there was no school on the holiday. His night class college schedule still conflicts with our class schedule, so he still can't come back to teach.
He still teaches scuba diving, and was just in St Bart's teaching a client!
For now, hopefully we'll see him Mondays on those 3 day holiday weekends to workout!
Monday, December 29, 2014
Mr Giancarlo came by to take class, and update us. He's still in school, and has a great job working for the boy scouts. Hopefully we'll see him more often than twice a year!
Now that's he's graduated college and is working, we hope to see him in class more often!
CONGRATULATIONS TO PAULA KIRCHNER ON HER SECOND DEGREE BLACKBELT, JULY 20TH 2013
SHE CONTINUED TO TRAIN AFTER HER FIRST DEGREE BLACKBELT AWARDED SEPT 1, 2012
Way to go Paula! We added a second gold embroidered bar to her black belt!
Scroll down to read more about Paula and see more photos, also visit the "about us" page
Congratulations to our newest Junior Blackbelt Samuel Hendershot! Awarded July 20, 2013
He shows so much maturity and leadership at such a young age, and had an amazing test! We're so proud to include him as one of our blackbelts! Pictured here getting his new belt with Master Z, and with Ms Jamie and Master Z and his blackbelt certificate.
Congratulations to Kia Ahankoob for winning his May 24th 2013 fight!
With Master Nicky and Master Z training him, how could he lose!
We'll keep you posted on his next fight in August
It's about time right? I found a tutorial online about twitter, slowing figuring it out.
really don't expect to find the time to spend hours tweeting, or give minute to minute accounting of our whereabouts etc, but you never know, at least it's a start.
I thought I'd get Master Z to start commenting on upcoming fights, in addition to posting any upcoming karate/kickbox/MMA/soccer events and pro MMA/Kickboxing shows that he may be judging or refereeing! When our daughter Nico was 10, she got us the twitter account. She has instagram, snap chat, etc. and just about everything else that kids nowadays are pretty much born knowing how to do! (apparently, @zacharatos was taken, so we added the 1, besides, we like being #1)
We also discovered another gerasimos zacharatos, who has an account @GerasimosG, since August of 2012, but that's not us!
Master Zacharatos name is spelled with two "s" Gerassimos
But just know it's NOT our account, and that's not Master Z
Check out the screen shot below of the twitter header I made,
at least it will look cool even if we don't tweet too often yet!
I use it for both my art website Designsbyjamie.com, and our karate website Zacharatos.com
What a challenge for me to cram so much in with so few words!
Master Z and Jamie, finally joining the Social Media of the 21st century, sort of, . . . Gradually!
Mr Giancarlo's current college schedule conflicts with most of our class schedule, and in summer he's teaching scuba diving in Catalina.
He hopes to get a better schedule one of these semesters, so he can be available to teach with us again.
Until then, our own amazing second degree blackbelt, Mr. Dean, will be assisting Master Z and Mrs. Z with their classes, and weapons class. (See what happens when these kids want to get a college education, we lose our teaching assistants! ha ha)
Update since this posting-
Mr. Giancarlo graduated college, and has a great job in finance!
Mr. Dean is a senior in highschool
WHERE ARE THEY NOW BLASTS FROM THE PAST!
Keep up with some of our former Students, years later!
If you're one of our long time students, you probably remember them too!
One of our former longtime Kickboxing Students Todd Marks, is now one of the leading Luxury Realtors in Southern California. He has a weekly blog, and was kind enough to give a shout out to me as featured artist of the week designsbyjamie.com in his blog, right next to a Picasso, we should all shoot for the stars!
For more info on Todd Marks: CaliforniaLuxuryEstateHomes.com
Congratulations Paula Kirchner, awarded her First Degree Blackbelt on Sept. 1, 2012 It's been a long time coming! Paula has known Master Z since she was 11 years old!
She got to red belt, and stopped training as a teenager.
About 20 years and two kids later she decided to continue her training, and finally go for her blackbelt!
She had a great test, and we're so proud to count her as one of our Zacharatos Blackbelts! Way to go Paula!
She is currently training for her second degree blackbelt, there's no stopping her now`!
Breaking boards on her test, getting her new belt, and with Master Z and Mrs Z with her new blackbelt certificate. See more pics on the "about us" page!
Pictured below Sept. 1, 2012:
Master Z (middle), with his former student, and former World Karate Kata Champion,
Michelle "the Mouse" Krasnoo (left),
and newest Zacharatos blackbelt, Paula Kirchner (right) Master Z has know Mouse since she was about two years old, and trained her for many years when he was working at Sherman Oaks Karate before he opened his own studio with his wife.
Mouse got her blackbelt at age 13 at Sherman Oaks Karate over 20 years ago, and went on to compete in Forms for many years, achieving many titles, and was in some martial arts movies as well.
Paula started training at Sherman Oaks karate at age 11, and stopped at red belt at the age of 17, until she recently started training again 20 years later to finish her blackelt.
Mouse and Paula remained close friends all these years since their time at Sherman Oaks karate when they were kids, and Mouse came to watch Paula's blackbelt test.
Paula is also the sister of one of our other Zacharatos blackbelts, Martita Wilkinson, who trained with Mrs. Z at Sherman Oaks karate as well, before finishing her blackbelt at Zacharatos Karate.
We love the history of relationships unique to the martial arts, of remaining in touch with our students for decades. Paula and Mouse have known Master Z longer than Mrs. Z has known him, and now we all have our own kids!
What a great story!
ANOTHER BLAST FROM THE PAST! MICAH ROBERTS RETURNS TO TOWN!
SSome of you who go way back with us may remember Micah Roberts.
He was one of our amazingly talented karate instructors over a decade ago in our 3rd location upstairs in Tarzana before we moved our business to the Calabasas tennis and swim center.
He trained at Sherman Oaks Karate when he was a kid, where Master Zacharatos was chief instructor, and has several blackbelts. He also knew Paula and Mouse from those days at Sherman Oaks.
Then when he worked for us, he knows some of our first Zacharatos Blackbelts, Martita, Captain, Brad, red belt and video game designer Jeremy Luyties, and even blackbelts Ralph Johnson and Mark Anthony Johnson. He knows some of our kickboxers Brian Pazera, Mason and Cookie too! He was our only assistant that could actually do a back flip! He held is own sparring with the kickboxers even though he primarily trained in karate.
Anyways, after losing touch for over a decade, and 3 kids later, he's back in Woodland Hills. He has a personal fitness training business, and if you're interested in personal fitness training you can check it out at: -Micah Roberts- website: http://www.intouchfitness.com
tel: (818) 399-8052
More congratulations for some of our kickboxing students recent accomplishments in 2012 -2014 Brian Pazera:
He graduated Chiropractic school in December of 2012! Brian started training with us when he was only 12, and competed in amateur kickboxing competitions, he was also one of our teaching assistants. See his bio on our "about us" page.
He worked as a Chiropractic Intern in North Hollywood, he even adjusted Master Z and Mr. Giancarlo! He finished his internship in 2013 and is offically "Dr. Brian"!
to contact his office in North Hollywood call: (818) 980-5141
visit his website at: drbrianpazeradc.com
She trained with us for many years in kickboxing, and was an accomplished actress and producer (under the name Mason Dragotto)
Having beauty and brains, she decided to switch gears and go to medical school!
It was a greuling 2 year program to be a Physicians Assistant (PA) and she graduated top of her class in 2012 among students half her age and with more experience such as paramedics and nurses, and is now working as a PA. Way to go Mason!
Allison a.k.a."Cookie" Congratulations to Cookie on her recent wedding in 2014!
She started training with us in Kickboxing when she was only 16 in the class with Brian and Mason 19 years ago!
She had a job in a bakery for a short time, so Master Z nicknamed her "Cookie"
Years ago she lived and worked in China for a few years, she's traveled the world, and we always stayed in touch, and she kept her nickname Cookie during her travels!
Now she's married!
We wish her much happiness and all the best!
Now that's commitment to kickboxing! (and each other)
Check out their one year anniversary card!
Congratulations to Cookie and her husband who just had their first child in 2016,
it's a boy!
YET ANOTHER BLAST FROM THE PAST
Master Z trained Jeremy since he was 8 years old at Sherman Oaks Karate over 30 years ago!
Years later, he came back to continue train with us in our first location as a blue belt, and worked his way to red belt.
He was one of the few like our Brian Pazera who was so talented he could switch from Kickboxing and Karate in sparring!
Jeremy has such a rare natural ability in the Martial Arts. He also grew up training with Mouse and Paula at Sherman Oaks, and knows all our original Zacharatos blackbelts as well, Brad, Captain, Martita, the Johnsons, etc.
Jeremy was also one of our assistant instructors at our 3rd location in Tarzana when Micah worked for us too, and Brian was a student!
And sometimes, when we couldn't find Jeremy, he was across the street playing video games!
Well who knew that was the start of his training for his amazing career.
Jeremy is one of the most sucessful head video game designers of such games as "Call of Duty" for Activision.
We keep hoping that both Brian and Jeremy, who stopped at red belt, will find the time to finish and get their blackbelts.
Occasionally they come by to train at our kickboxing class when their schedules allow.
Jeremy has known Master Z for over 30 years, and this is another amazing success story of one of our karate kids!
See photos below!
Jeremy's amazing flying side kick.

KEEPING UP WITH OUR BLACKBELT AND FORMER ASSISTANT INSTRUCTOR (from 16-18yrs old),
OUR OWN ENTERPRISING MR. GIANCARLO HAS QUITE A RESUME FOR BEING JUST 22 years old (in 2015)
Having 3rd and 2nd degree blackbelts in two styles of martial arts is only the beginning . . .
In college he had is own fully insured tutoring business
He offered in home tutoring on a variety of subjects, and had
highly qualified tutors from Channel Islands University, he also worked for a while in the business side of the boy scouts while he was in school.
But now that he graduated from college, he no longer has the tutoring business.
He studied Finance and Business, and started working in his new job as a financial advisor in in 2016!
Mr Giancarlo also has an artistic side, and exhibited some of his amazing framed Photos at the Calabasas Tennis and Swim Center's artist alley in November of 2012
When he was younger was awarded his Eagle Scout!
He started in the scouts and in our karate class when he was 6 years old, and that's when Master Z nicknamed him Trooper!
He is also a certified Dive Master Instructor! You can read more about him on our "about us" page
Over 20 years ago in our very first location, we had two brothers as students, Michael D. and Jonathan D. Turns out, Michael, all grown up now of course, and was our daughter's music teacher when she was in elementary school!
When you stay in one community long enough, stories like this are bound to happen!
Master Nicky from Nicky's Pro Karate in Calabasas taught a special Mixed Martial Arts class during our Kickboxing class, May 9. 2012. It was a great class showing useful techniques for both men and women.
Master Z and Mr.Giancarlo will also be Guest instructors at Nicky's.
It's a great for students to be able to share an instructor's special expertise when different studios can work together!
Master Z and Master Nicky have a lot in common and have become good friends.
More recently, Master Z worked with one of Nicky's fighters, assisting him train for an upcoming fight.
Photos from wrestling expert and blackbelt Chris Roos,
working on wrestling techniques during our Kickboxing/MMA class, on April 25, 2012
Even Master Zacharatos and Mr. Giancarlo particapated!
We'll keep you posted on classes taught by special guest instuctors!
Everyone had a great time, and was inspired to learn more!
Thanks Chris, for bringing your wrestling expertise to Zacharatos!
Come check out our brand new mats! 2012
MAY 22, 2012
Our own second degree blackbelt, Nico Zacharatos, was one of 12 winners out of 2,627 entries in the Las Virgenes Water District water poster design contest that most all elementary school students in the district enter.
A framed pic goes in the office of her elementary school and at the water district in Calabasas.
The calendars with all the winning designs will be issued this fall of 2012.
There was also a story about it in the Acorn Newspaper on page 15, in the May 31, 2012 issue,
and she got a congratulation letter from the State Senator!
Way to go Nico!
A STAR IS BORN !
March 11, 2011
Mr. Giancarlo wowed the crowd and stole the show at a talent show at his highschool with his Extreme Martial arts routine and commanding stage presence!
The Crowd went wild, there was board breaking, weapons, knife fights, katas, stunts, just amazing, and he choreographed it too! *(Giancarlo is also in our Karate TV commerical above when he was a little boy!)
For your convenience, in addition to MasterCard and Visa, we now accept Discover and American Express as well!
Congratulations to Mr. Giancarlo, who was awarded his Eagle Scout!
Hence the nickname Trooper, Master Z gave Mr. Giancarlo when he was only 6 years old!
Congratulations to Four of our Junior Blackbelts who were awarded their Second Degree Blackbelts on December 14, 2011 ! Pictured above, instructors in back row:
Mrs. Zacharatos, Master Zacharatos, and Mr. Giancarlo Front Row: Mr. Mattias, Ms Nico Zacharatos, Ms Jupin, and Mr. Dean (See more on the "about us" page)
They had to demonstrate complex blackbelt forms and their weapons skills in nunchucks, bow staff, and escrima sticks, taught by our own Mr. Giancarlo. Turns out they had several 2 hour training sessions in the freezing cold and rain (under the tent) where our weapons class is held.
Enduring the harsh elements is not a normal part of our blackbelt training, but it just so happened the weather was extreme during their last few practices. They never complained, they all stepped up and really did their best, and improved so much in the last few weeks of intense training.
We're so proud of our young Second Degree Blackbelts!
Congratulations to Deen and Zachary who were awarded their first degree of Junior Blackbelt on December 21st 2011!
Years of hard work paid off!
Their first "official" act as Junior Blackbelts, bowing in the lower ranks and warming up the class!
Congratulations to Martin Yacoobian who was awarded his First Degree Blackbelt on Oct 12, 2011 Marty started training with Master Z when he was only 8 years old!
He's one of our few students who had been with us through all our locations over the years.
He stooped training as a child at bluebelt, but nearly 20 years later, he was determined to fininsh his blackbelt.
He trained several times per week on a regular basis going up the ranks, and we are proud to include him as one of our Zacharatos Blackbelts.
It's never too late to finish!!
Double Congratulations to Giancarlo, who was awarded his second degree blackbelt from Master Zacharatos on June 8th 2011, and Gradiated High School on June 9th!

WE ARE SO PLEASED TO WELCOME BACK GIANCARLO HAMNER!
Giancarlo started training with us many years ago when he was about 6 years old.
He trained together with Shane Bick, Kayla Mason, and Gabriella Flores,
who also went on to get their junior blackbelts with us.
Giancarlo got to second redbelt when his family moved out of Calabasas,
and he had to stop training with us.
But being very motivated, he continued to train, and started over in another style
at a school in his new neighborhood, and eventually achieved his second and third degree blackbelt there, and trained in weapons as well.
Unlike many junior blackbelts who quit training once they get their first blackbelt at under 16 years of age, Giancarlo, at 16,
and just about as tall as Master Zacharatos,
wanted to finish his Blackbelt in the style he started with, "Tang Soo Do",
with Master Zacharatos, and that's exactly what he did! (starting in 2009) As he continues his training in MMA, Boxing, and Karate with Master Zacharatos, he will assist Master Zacharatos with our
junior and adult classes, along with Mrs Zacharatos, and he will teach our popular weapons class for our advanced students.
Nick-named as a child "Trooper" by Master Zacharatos, because of his
achievements in the Eagle Scouts,
he is a wonderful example to our young students-
His high flying kicks and flashy weapons, don't hurt either! and he brings a great energy to all our classes!
